How to use it
- I want to
Add VAT to a price without it, or work back from a price that already includes VAT.
- Price
The price you're starting from: without VAT if you're adding it, with VAT if you're removing it.
- VAT rate
The standard UK rate is 20%. Some goods and services use the reduced 5% rate or 0%.
Common uses
- Pricing products or quotes for customers.
- Checking the VAT on an invoice or receipt.
- Working out other percentages. Try the Percentage Calculator
- Setting prices with a profit margin.
The formula
Adding: price with VAT = price × (1 + rate ÷ 100)Removing: price without VAT = price ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)Where:
- rate
- the VAT rate as a percentage, e.g. 20
To remove 20% VAT, divide by 1.2. Multiplying by 0.8 gives the wrong answer.
Worked example
Adding VAT at 20% to £100:
- VAT: £100 × 20% = £20.00
- Price including VAT: £100 + £20.00 = £120.00
Questions people ask
How do I take VAT off a price?
Divide by 1 plus the rate. For 20% VAT, divide by 1.2: £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100. Taking 20% off (£120 × 0.8 = £96) is a common mistake because the VAT was 20% of the lower price, not the higher one.
What are the UK VAT rates?
The standard rate is 20%, the reduced rate is 5% and some items are zero-rated at 0%. Some things are exempt from VAT altogether. GOV.UK lists which rate applies to which goods and services.
Can I use a different rate?
Yes. Enter any rate in the VAT rate box, for example to check a temporary rate or another country's VAT.
