What it does

Enter a list of numbers to get its average (the mean), the middle value (median), the most common value (mode) and the spread (range), along with the count and total.

How to use it

Numbers

Type or paste your numbers, separated by commas, spaces or new lines. In countries that write decimals with a comma (2,5), separate them with spaces or semicolons instead.

Common uses

  • Averaging test scores, marks or grades.
  • Finding the typical price, time or reading in a set of results.
  • Working out percentages. Try the Percentage Calculator

The formula

Mean = total ÷ how many numbersMedian = the middle number once sorted (or the mean of the two middle numbers)Range = largest − smallest

Where:

Mode
the number that appears most often; there can be more than one, or none

The median is less affected by one very high or very low number than the mean.

Worked example

For the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42:

  • Mean: 108 ÷ 6 = 18
  • Median: in order they're 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42; the middle two are 15 and 16, so the median is 15.5
  • Range: 42 − 4 = 38

Questions people ask

What's the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean adds everything up and divides by how many there are. The median is the middle value when the numbers are in order. The mode is the value that appears most often. For 2, 3, 3, 4 and 18, the mean is 6, the median is 3 and the mode is 3.

Which average should I use?

Use the mean for most everyday averages. Use the median when a few values are much bigger or smaller than the rest, such as house prices or salaries, because it isn't pulled up or down by them.

How do I find the median of an even number of values?

Put them in order and take the mean of the two in the middle. For 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42, the middle two are 15 and 16, so the median is 15.5.
