What it does
Find out what an amount of money from a past year is worth today, using the UK's official Consumer Prices Index (CPI). Or choose your own inflation rate to see how prices grow in the years ahead, and how much less your money will buy. A year-by-year table shows how the amount changes.
How to use it
- Use
UK prices uses the official Consumer Prices Index from 1988 to 2025. Choose your own rate to look ahead, or for another country.
- Amount
A price, a salary or any sum of money.
- In the year
The year the amount is from, 1988 to 2025.
- Worth in the year
The year to compare with. 2025 is the latest full year. An earlier year works too, to see what today's money was worth back then.
- Inflation rate
The yearly rate to assume. The Bank of England aims for 2%; UK prices rose by an average of about 2.8% a year from 1988 to 2025.
- Over
How many years ahead.
Common uses
- Comparing an old salary or house price with today's.
- Checking whether a pay rise has kept up with prices.
- Planning how much savings need to grow to keep their value. Try the Compound Interest Calculator
- Seeing a pension pot in today's money. Try the Pension Calculator (UK)
The formula
UK prices: value = amount × CPI in the later year ÷ CPI in the earlier yearYour own rate: value = amount × (1 + rate)^yearsAverage a year = (value ÷ amount)^(1 ÷ years) − 1Where:
- CPI
- the Consumer Prices Index, yearly average (2015 = 100)
Uses yearly averages, so it compares typical prices across each year rather than one month with another. CPI covers the cost of a typical basket of goods and services; your own costs, such as rent or fuel, may have risen faster or slower.
Worked example
£100 in 2000, in 2025 prices:
- CPI in 2000: 72.7; in 2025: 138.4
- £100 × 138.4 ÷ 72.7 = £190.37
Prices rose 90.37% over the period, an average of 2.61% a year.
Questions people ask
What is £100 from 2000 worth today?
Using yearly average CPI, £100 in 2000 is worth about £190 in 2025: prices nearly doubled. Put in your own amount and years above.
Why CPI and not RPI?
CPI is the UK's official measure of inflation and the one the Bank of England targets. RPI is an older measure that usually shows higher inflation and is no longer a national statistic, though it's still used for some things such as student loan interest.
Can I see a single month, or the current year?
Not yet: it uses whole-year averages, and 2025 is the latest complete year. The ONS publishes monthly figures if you need an exact month.
